This is not just another birdwatching guide. It may the best single book about birds ever. Most field guides go through an extensive list of species, with the sole goal of identifying them. Any special biologic or behavioural features, if mentioned at all, serve only towards the compulsive need for naming, as if it were some sort of conquest. I never understood this approach. It always left me with the empty feeling of reading labels on dead specimens in a museum.Sibley’s approach here turns all that on its head. Instead of an exhaustive list, you are presented with a broad array of birds that are commonly seen. But rather than the goal, the identifying descriptions are just the beginning, a springboard to tweak our curiosity of how that particular bird, and birds in general, have masterfully evolved to fit their ecological niche. Interspersed between the specifics are concise anecdotes on how amazing the biology of birds really is, from how they can breathe and sing at the same time to the design marvels of their feathers. You’ll never take a sparrow or starling for granted again. Like birdsong, this book is a refreshing inspiration that will restore your sense of wonder in Nature. I preordered this beautiful book, but I was hoping for a book that really delves into cognitive function in birds and their inner and outer lives. This book is like a vague field guide companion (vague in the sense it doesn't cover all birds, or even all birds in a family(vultures for instance, only mentions turkey vultures, but black vultures and california condors do behave a little differently and are all fascinating in their own, unique ways). I love all books and I still think this was a decent purchase, I was just hoping for something a little more advanced. I am not a professional ornithologist, just an obsessive learner and so far there isn't anything in this book that I didn't know already. Needless to say, I think it is a excellent addition to my coffee table books as it is lovely to flip through and is full of good information that many people might not be aware of, and find interesting.
